Sunset Pier is one of the oldest piers in the Florida Keys. A calm eddy in an otherwise swift tide provides the perfect spot, with deep water access, which is why there's been a pier on this site since the late 1830s.
The pier was used by the Navy during the Civil War, then became a coal dock when sailing ships gave way to steam. It went on to be used as a hauling out place for fishing ships, a ferry terminus, a slaughterhouse for sea turtles and sharks, and for unloading sea sponges.
